Mērķis – lai visi Latviešu namā jūtas “kā mājās”
Intervija ar Melburnas latviešu nama komitejas valdes locekli, Biti Švolmani.
Cik gadus jau esi MLNK valdē?
Esmu piedalījusies nama valdē kopš 2009.gada.
Kāpēc iesistījies Nama valdē?
Iesāku tur darboties kā Daugavas skolas pārstāve. Latviešu namam un mūsu divām Melburnas skolām ir tuvas attiecības: viens bez otra nevar eksistēt. Es iestājos cerot, ka MLNK valde būs tā vieta, kur praktiskā veidā varēs mudināt cilvēkiem iesaistīties mūsu latviešu sabiedrībā. Jutu arī atbildību kopt to, ko mūsu vecākā paaudze bija izveidojusi šeit Melburnā.
Kādos Nama darbos esi iesaistijusies laikā, ko esi bijusi valdē? Kā saredzi Melburnas latviešu nama nākotni?
Man dod pieku redzēt, ka mūsu Namu izmanto: ka tur apgrozās veci un jauni, ka telpās skan latviešu valoda un ka tur sestdienas rītos smaržo pēc svaigi ceptiem pīragiem. Ar mūsu moderno dzīvi, ir jauki iegriezties Dikens ielā un zināt ka tur varēs latviskā vidē izmukt uz kādu brīdi no ikdienas problēmām. Tamdēļ valdes darba gaitās, man ir bijis liels prieks mēģināt iztaisīt mūsu namu par tādu vietu, kur cilvēki vēlas pakavēties. 2014.ngada kafejnīcas atjaunošana bija projekts, kur varēju pielikt roku īstenot šo mērķi.
Kur ir Tava mīļākā vieta Melburnas latviešu namā?
Mana mīļākā vieta namā ir jaunā kafejnīcas virtuve, kur var priecāties cepot pīragus un smalkmaizītes kopā ar draugiem. Ir jauki redzēt, ka cilvēki novērtē šos svaigi ceptos gardumus un pakavējas mūsu jaunajā omulīgajā kafejnīcā!
Es ceru, ka jaunākā paaudze ar latviskām saitēm turpinās iesaistīties nama dzīvē: vai nu tur darboties vai vienkārši to apmeklēt. Es ceru, ka Nams turpināsies būt Melburnas latviešu centrs, un ka to arī apmeklēs cilvēki, kuri ir nesen iebraukuši no Latvijas. Būtu labi, ka viņi arī tur justos “kā mājās”.

I joined the Board in 2009, when I was the representative from Daugava Primary School. Both schools and the Latvian House have a close tie: one can’t exist without the other. I joined as I thought this was a practical way to encourage others to get involved in the Latvian community. I felt a responsibility to continue what our older generation had founded here in Melbourne.
I am glad to see how the Latvian House is utilised: by young and old, that the Latvian language can be heard here and on Saturday mornings you can smell freshly baked pīrāgi. Living our modern lives, it is great to have this place on Dickens St where you know you can escape for a moment, away from our daily worries. That’s also why I’ve enjoyed helping to make the Latvian House a place where people like to stop by and spend some time. The refurbishment of the cafe in 2014 was one of these projects, that helped make the place more homely.
My favourite place at Latvian House is the kitchen where I can enjoy baking pīrāgi and sweet pastries with my friends. I’m glad that these freshly baked goods are popular and people enjoy coming to Nams to spend time at the cafe. I hope the younger generation will continue to get involved in community activities here: either by working here or coming to functions.I hope the Nams will continue to be the Melbourne Latvian central place and recently arrived Latvians from Lativa will also come regularly. I would also hope they will feel “at home” here.
